Chapter Twenty-Two

DARKNESS HAD FALLEN by the time we reached the bed n’ breakfast that Spencer had booked us into. The GPS had unerringly led us to the small, quaint building. We parked in the lot out front and grabbed our gear before heading inside.

A bell tinkled merrily when Quin pushed the door open. Two people stood at the end of the hallway next to the reception desk. They both looked up and smiled in welcome. Pleasantly plump, they were in their sixties.

“Welcome,” the woman said as she hurried towards us. “Please, come in out of the cold.” Her accent wasn’t Scottish and sounded French. “My name is Gabrielle and this is my husband, Pierre.” That backed up my theory about their origins.

Pierre offered us a short bow. “Is that all the luggage you have?” he asked.

“Yes,” Quin confirmed. “We won’t be staying in Scotland for long.”

Too polite to ask us what our business here was, Gabrielle asked us to sign in before handing us the keys to our rooms. “Pierre will show you to your rooms,” she said with a smile. “I will begin serving dinner in an hour. That should be enough time for you all to freshen up.”

“Do we have bathtubs in our bathrooms?” Mirra asked.

“Oui,” Gabrielle replied. “I am sure you will enjoy a long, hot soak.” Her gaze dropped to the siren’s lush body enviously. “Pierre, will you take care of our guests?”

“It will be my pleasure,” her husband replied. To his credit, he manfully tried not to turn around and stare at Mirra’s boobs as he escorted us up a flight of stairs.

Our rooms were small and cozy. I was glad to have a bathroom to myself again. Jonah appeared just as I was about to strip off. “Where were you?” I asked. He’d vanished as soon as we’d left the SUV.

“I was scoping the place out,” he replied. “As far as I can tell, there’s nothing dangerous here. I couldn’t see any other ghosts, either.”

“Good,” Quin called out from her room down the hall. “It would be nice to be able to take a shower without a dead man spying on me for once.”

Jonah and I sniggered, then he left me to take a shower alone. Connor was in the room next to mine. I could almost picture him standing there naked and covered in soapy water. Desire rose, but there was nothing I could do to quell it. We’d become bonded and he’d marked me, but it was still mostly a secret. We could only rarely act on the passion we felt for each other.

Frustrated and feeling slightly flushed after my shower, I got dressed and checked my backpack. Greta’s Grimoire was still there. It sat on top of my clothes, staring up at me smugly. I could almost hear it speaking in my mind, urging me to pick it up and use it.

“Ari!” Jonah said in an annoyed tone.

The undertone of concern broke me out of my slight daze. “Huh?” I said and closed the backpack.
